Denise Duncan Chesney - posthumous
(Class of 1982)
Denise Duncan Chesney was a three sport varsity athlete who received numerous all league selections as well as All Valley in basketball. Her senior year she was a member of the Valley Champion volleyball team and won the Jim Tyack Award for best female athlete in Kern County. After graduation Denise accepted a basketball scholarship from Azusa Pacific University. Her amazing 4-year career led to her being inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 2001. During her time at Azusa she earned a degree in Business and met her future husband, Don Chesney. After getting married, they settled in Turlock, CA. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising two children—Douglas and Danielle. Denise poured love and care into her role as a mother, always supporting her children’s dreams and aspirations. The only thing Denise loved more than being on the basketball court was her family. Denise was a sister, daughter, mother, wife, coach, mentor, substitute teacher and friend to many. She gave back to her community in countless ways. Her passion for helping others was evident in her dedication to education and her involvement in various community initiatives. Just like in high school Denise was known for her vibrant personality, her contagious laugh, her love for her family, and her unwavering faith. Tragically, Denise passed away on September 29th, 2007, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Denise’s legacy lives on through her children, her husband, and the countless lives she touched throughout her life. Her spirit remains a guiding force for those who loved her. She is deeply missed by her husband, children, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her. |
