Diane McGee
Diane McGee was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. She lived in an area where everyday crime was the norm. She attended Fremont Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High, and Bakersfield High School. While attending BHS, Diane was the lieutenant for the Drillerettes. After graduating from BHS, Diane attended Bakersfield College and became a Gadette. The Gadette’s consisted of nine ladies who spelled out the word “Renegades” and marched in front of the band.
Since there was nothing for the kids to do in the neighborhood, Diane started the first neighborhood drill team in the community, which she named the Derbannettes. While attending school and teaching the kids drill, Diane was often looked up to as the big sister in the community. Diane graduated with her Associates degree from Bakersfield College and transferred to California State University of Bakersfield. While attending CSUB, Diane was part of the cheer squad. She was also a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. She graduated from CSUB with her Bachelors in Criminal Justice. During the 1977-78 school year, Diane was hired by the Kern High School District, as a Campus Supervisor, today known as Campus Security, at West High School. While working at West High, Diane became a co-advisor to clubs. As time went on, she started the Rally Club - a club for students who wanted to dance and display their talents. Diane was also involved in clubs, too: The Black Student Union (BSU), Mecha, and helped Dr. Brenda Lewis with starting YWEL; Young Women Empowered for Leadership. YWEL is a mentoring program for African American females. Diane spent her entire career here at West High School, and much of that time, she worked with at-risk students. Diane devotes her time to her church, St. Peter Missionary Baptist. She is also a part of the Stay Focus Ministry Toy Drive, Wendale Davis Foundation, the Black History Parade Committee, and is an advisor on the YWEL and Project Best boards. Diane is also a choreographer for the AKA sorority and other community events. Diane is an honorary military mother! Her daughter Erica, who graduated from West High in 1999, served twenty-three years in the army, before retiring. Diane’s daughter Tiffany lives in Bakersfield and teaches at AgapeLand Christian. Diane has three grandchildren: Aaric, Karrson and Kani. After 46 years with the Kern High School District, Diane has retired and is continuing to enjoy life by doing what she wants, when she wants and trying new things. One of Diane’s favorite quotes is by an unknown author. “When you're tempted to lose patience with someone, think about how patient God is with you.” If you know Diane, you know her motto in life. “Reach back and grab a hand and pull them up too. Because we didn't get to where we are alone, someone took us by the hand and helped us.” |
