Julie Seay (English)
Julie (Seay) English was born in Manhattan, Kansas in 1961. After her parents finished college at Kansas State, her family moved to Bakersfield as her dad had attained a teaching/coaching position at South High School. Since then, Julie has remained a Californian.
Julie attended West High School from 1975-1979. During her tenure at West High, she competed on the volleyball team for 3 years and the track/field team for 4 years. Her most beloved coach was Mr. Butcher. As a high jumper, Julie was a league champion for three years and an MVP. She was also in the Honor Society. During her high school years, she worked part-time retail jobs during the school year and full-time summer jobs (mostly at the Metler packing sheds with her dad.) Both of her parents instilled a strong work ethic in her.
After high school, Julie attended Cal State University, Bakersfield, majoring in Child Development and minoring in Fine Arts. She graduated magna cum laude with her BA in 1983, earned her Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential in 1984, and graduated summa cum laude with her MA in Education in 1991 (after 7 long years of commuting 3 hours, twice per week to the CSUB campus after teaching elementary school all day.) In 1981, Julie married her husband who was a fellow student at CSUB. They have now been married for over 41 years.
In her professional career, Julie worked as an elementary school teacher for 12 years, loving every minute of it. During these years, Julie also coached volleyball and track/field. In 1996, the Lord blessed her and her husband with a beautiful baby boy and another precious baby boy arrived in 1998. These boys are Julie’s pride and joy, and that’s an understatement! She left public school teaching to raise her children. After the toddler years, she began a 17-year long journey of homeschooling her children from pre-k through 12th grade. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of her life. And, even though she was quite busy, Julie has always been an adept multi-tasker. So, during these years she was also an elected school board trustee, a college professor, a grant writer, a project manager, and an early childhood teacher/director. She is particularly proud of her work in establishing a non-profit, The Wind in the Willows Education Organization, and subsequently garnering grant funding to establish an early childhood program in her area.
Julie is service-minded. She began an AYSO chapter in her area and volunteered as an administrator/coach for 8 years. She also brought a youth gymnastics program to her area. Additionally, she was a member of the Kern County Child Care Council, a member of the EAFB Restoration Advisory Board, an EAFB Awana leader/director for 10 years, and a Boy Scouts of America leader/committee chair for 10 years. Community service is just a way of life for her and her family.
Julie has received several awards including Favorite Elementary School Teacher, the Kern County Child Care Council “Person of the Year” award, and is a two-time recipient of the CSUB “Alumnus of the Year” award.
Today, Julie busies herself with caring for her family, helping her son start his restaurant business, and embracing the homesteading lifestyle. There may even be chickens and goats in her future! She also has ideas for a couple of books she wants to write. Julie continues to enjoy life and learn new things. Her guiding verses are 1 Corinthians 9:25-27.
